Yeah, so, I think it’s nice that all of my issues with the Zooey Deschanel backlash that’s been going around for a while (She dresses like a little girl! She’s too twee! She’s bad for feminism!) were addressed by Zooey herself (well, kind of) on New Girl this week. A lot of people who are feminists are who I respect very much dislike Zooey for these reasons. And it’s fine to dislike her if her twee annoys you or whatever—I get that it isn’t for everyone—but aren’t we always saying there’s no wrong way to be a woman? Why is it okay to revile her for wearing ruffly dresses and doing her doe-eye poses? She’s not anti-feminist (that I know of). She’s not promoting the patriarchy. (Women are not responsible for perpetuating the patriarchy based on what clothes or makeup or hairstyles they wear, and how suggesting they are is any different from slut-shaming is beyond me.) She’s dressing the way she likes to dress, or she’s making a career decision—either way, I will never understand why this makes her an object of ridicule.
