White feminists:
split-the-coast:
When you discuss the wage gap, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Only white women make $0.77 to a man’s dollar.
- Black women make about $0.68 to a man’s dollar.
- Latina women make about $0.58 to a man’s dollar.
Intersectionality matters.

"I want to live in a world where little girls are not pinkified, but where little girls who like pink are not punished for it, either. We can certainly talk about the social pressures surrounding gender roles, and the concerns that people have when they see girls and young women who appear to be forced into performances of femininity by the society around them, but let’s stop acting like they have no agency and free will. Let’s stop acting like women who choose to be feminine are somehow colluders, betraying the movement, bamboozled into thinking that they want to be feminine. Let’s stop denying women their own autonomy by telling them that their expressions of femininity are bad and wrong.
Antifemininity is misogynist. What you are saying when you engage in this type of rhetoric is that you think things traditionally associated with women are wrong. Which is misogynist. By telling feminine women that they don’t belong in the feminist movement, you are reinforcing the idea that to be feminine and a woman is wrong, that women who want to be taken seriously need to be more masculine, because most people view gender presentation in binary ways. This rewards the ‘one of the boys’ type rhetoric I encounter all over the place from self-avowed feminists who seem to think that bashing on women is a good way to prove how serious they are when it comes to caring about women and bringing men into the feminist movement."

Yeah, so, I think it’s nice that all of my issues with the Zooey Deschanel backlash that’s been going around for a while (She dresses like a little girl! She’s too twee! She’s bad for feminism!) were addressed by Zooey herself (well, kind of) on New Girl this week. A lot of people who are feminists are who I respect very much dislike Zooey for these reasons. And it’s fine to dislike her if her twee annoys you or whatever—I get that it isn’t for everyone—but aren’t we always saying there’s no wrong way to be a woman? Why is it okay to revile her for wearing ruffly dresses and doing her doe-eye poses? She’s not anti-feminist (that I know of). She’s not promoting the patriarchy. (Women are not responsible for perpetuating the patriarchy based on what clothes or makeup or hairstyles they wear, and how suggesting they are is any different from slut-shaming is beyond me.) She’s dressing the way she likes to dress, or she’s making a career decision—either way, I will never understand why this makes her an object of ridicule.
BREAKING: Obama administration approves a rule that essentially guarantees universal contraceptive coverage. →

A MAJOR WIN for women’s health!
WOAH, DAMN!
Opponents of contraception had lobbied hard for a broad exemption that would have allowed any religiously-affiliated employer to opt out of providing such coverage. Fortunately, the Obama administration rejected that push and decided to maintain the narrow religious exemption that it initially proposed. Only houses of worship and other religious nonprofits that primarily employ and serve people of the same faith will be exempt.
The kind of thing I voted for when I voted for Obama.

I’m a little upset that Tracy Morgan’s homophobic rants are getting all this attention when I know from a friend who attended that he also made some awful comments about how every woman gets molested and he’s sick of hearing about it. If we’re going to stand up against his hateful comedy, let’s do it. Let’s not just stand up against certain parts of it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m so glad the gentleman that wrote about his homophobic slurs got media attention and has put Mr. Morgan in a position where he had to apologize/is doing community service, no matter how insincere. I just wish he would have stood up for survivors as well.
unicornicopia:
Today this showed up on my dash. It’s not the first time (and it will in all likelihood will not be the last time) that this kind of attitude has popped up, and I wish I could kill it with fire. As my buddy Heather likes to point out, there is no wrong way to be a girl. I wish people would stop putting down other women and invalidating their choices because they don’t match their own. It doesn’t matter if a girl prefers facebook to tumblr, makeup to a bareface or shopping to videogames, because she is a complex human being, who doesn’t deserve to be written off because she doesn’t match your idea of what’s special or different. Please stop simplifying women to caricatures.
